Poem 12

The Nightingale

Night has come, it descends on the forest

Stars begin to glitter, the moon is aglow

A nightingale sings at nature’s behest

Bringing me memories of times long ago

All is calm but for my troubled heart

For I’m alone in my cabin

Since my love and I drifted apart

And that’s when heartaches crept in

I remember her childlike ways

Her ruby red lips, her light blue eyes

I remember those days

Of endless sunshine, cloudless skies

Something between us went wrong

Now solitude has overcome me

But the nightingale sings its song

And I’m captured by its melody

Dear companion of the night

You always cheer a lonesome soul

Dear musician, you bring delight

To hear you sing, is my nighttime goal

Poem 11

Come to Me

When your heart is in sorrow

And loneliness takes its hold

Dry your tears, and be bold

The sun will rise again tomorrow

When your lover sets you free

Because he found another sweetheart

Don’t let him tear you apart

Just come to me, come to me

When people are too blind to see

That you need someone true

Someone who won’t hurt you

Just come to me, come to me

When life is a chain of misery

And you are sad and forlorn

And all your hopes are gone

Just come to me, come to me

Coral Island

No one listens, no can understand

The loneliness I feel, the sorrow

So I dream of a Coral Island

To where I can escape tomorrow

Last night I dreamed of the past

Days and nights, no one cared

People’s mockery seemed built to last

To fight those mobs, I had not dared

Last night I dreamed of a Coral Island

Where silence is serene, silvery is the sand

Even now, every day, every night

Someone sneers, someone has a scowl

They all come to pick a fight

Looking for trouble, they are on the prowl

So at nights I dream of a Coral Island

With welcoming people, a peaceful land

And so I’ll fly to a Coral Island

At last I’ll escape this bitter torment

Of a world where solid I stand

Away from the mobs, a bitter torrent

Poem 9

A China Girl

I see her from my window

She walks at a steady pace

A light golden face

I wish I could be in her shadow

I dream of her on stage

Her voice like a young child

My heart flutters, I go wild

Love turns a new page

I dream of her on the cinema

A queen above all actresses

With glittering elaborate dresses

She is a beauty from China

I dream of us together

Living in an exquisite mansion

Admiring each other with a passion

And both of us in love forever

But a sad thought continues to persist

She does not know I exist

Tinkerbell

Tinkerbell, you fly around Never-land

You’re so small, so frisky

Always fluttering with energy

Won’t you come to Winter Wonderland?

Tinkerbell, your heart is so tender

You’re so cute, so pretty

And it’s such a pity

Peter Pan is not your lover

Tinkerbell, you tiny fairy

It’s time you came down for Christmas

Please won’t you join us

Bells will be ringing in the city

Tinkerbell, step out of your shell

There’s no need to be alone

All your worries will be gone

When you hear the silver bell

Why We Are In Love

Why do the stars glitter at night?

Why do they shine for so long?

They know our love is only right,

That our love cannot be wrong.

Why does the sun shine so bright?

Why are its rays so warm?

It shines on our love, its celestial light,

It knows that in love, there is no harm.

Why do mountains reach to the sky?

Why are they so majestic, so grand?

They know our love is no lie

That our love is the best in the land

Why do rivers flow to the sea?

Why do streams pay homage to a river?

They know our love was meant to be,

That we are meant for each other.

Poem 6

Rose of Cairo

She lives in a poor district

Near the heart of Cairo

No one else can depict

How much I love her so

Her eyes are brown and pretty

She has glossy black hair

Her costume is the best in the city

And her face is smooth and fair

Every night, my head on my pillow

I pray she will someday be my bride

Then all the world will know

The gorgeous beauty by my side

I adore her, she is meant for me

But alas, she does not even know me

Poem 5

Dream City

I yearn to go to Utopia

Day and night, night and day

I long to be free of inertia

In this place that’s wasting away

This place is cold and cruel

Of envy, people never tire

Day after day, a deadly duel

And rivalry stokes up the fire

I yearn to be in Utopia

Where people can use reason

Brotherhood is not a fantasia

Friendships survive every season

I long to be in a place

Where flora and fauna can flourish

Of hatred and greed no trace

Equality is what people cherish

I yearn for Utopia with an ‘iron fist’

Although I know it does not exist

Poem 4

A Girl Like You

There are birds of paradise,

Enchanting, beautiful, full of grace.

But none of them are as wise,

None so glamorous in the face,

As a girl like you.

There are girls who are full of wonder,

Holding secrets of romance.

But none of them have the power,

To hold me in a trance,

As a girl like you.

There are ladies who are princesses,

With costumes elegant and bright.

But none of them have the dresses,

That make my heart go light,

As a girl like you.

There are girls with fortune and fame,

They win the hearts of millions.

None of them have love to their name,

They are all full of illusions.

Love is a girl like you.

Poem 3

15 Steps

Fifteen steps to climb to the top

To the ultimate gain, the success

I must climb this ladder, despite the stress

I cannot wait, I cannot stop

Fifteen steps, a ninety degree slope

I’m sweating, the sun scorches me

But I must climb to be free

I cannot, I dare not lose hope

Down below a fire rages

One wrong step, and I’ll fall

But determination makes its call

And I’m soon in the final stages

One more step to the top

My fingers are shaking

My body is sore, and aching

But its too late to stop

At last I’m on the top of the ladder

And I climb into a waiting helicopter

Poem 2

December

A Poem by Hasan Abdulla

It was a night in December

You said you loved me in every way

Ever since then I remember

The sweet things you would say

It was the day before Christmas

You promised you would never leave

But someone came between us

Losing you is still hard to believe

And now the nights in December

Are cold and lonely, and tiresome

Without you here I suffer

The agonies of being lonesome

Every year I patiently wait

For you to return to me

It can never be too late

For love to renew, don’t you see?

Poem 1

Summer in the City

By Hasan Abdulla

This hot, long dry summer, the blazing heat

is stifling, scorching roofs and buildings alike

On pavements, people sweat and drag their feet

Our city is bathed in hot weather

Fumes of smog fly upwards from chimneys

The vehicles blow their horns, and roads are full

With tired, weary backs we toil with work

in factories, city offices, everywhere

By evening, we trudge home, aching for rest

This hot, long dry summer, the city’s parks

are dry and parched; the streams and ponds are bare,

and birds are scarce.  Magpies barely caw

robins never nestle, doves never mate

This hot summer, the skies are heavy with smog

Our lungs are tight, we choke for fresh winds

The eyes are sore and red, and feet are sweaty

This hot summer, we want a thunderstorm

to clear the city air, wash off dust and smog

This hot, long dry summer, children complain

of fatigue.  Ice cream vendors profiteer

while bookshops stay empty.

This hot summer, the city is a dormant giant

dreaming of happiness, of cooler winds

This hot summer, the city is a restless giant

Pining for merriment, and for fun

It is tired of the scorching, burning heat

When summer goes away, the city awakes
